15 Apr Purple Up!
Military children make up a significant part of our nation’s population as they stand in steadfast support of their military family members. According to a recent military demographics report, there are more than 1.6 million military force-dependent children. Each April is designated the Month of the Military Child to honor their unique contributions and sacrifices on behalf of our country.
The recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger, who established the commemoration in 1986. During the month, one day is selected as the day to “Purple Up! For Military Kids,” and everyone is encouraged to wear purple to recognize the strength and sacrifices of military-connected youth.
Why purple? Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue.
This year Purple Up Day will be celebrated on April 15. Celebrating military children provides a powerful opportunity to raise awareness and build support to help these children meet their unique challenges! It is an opportunity to recognize and thank military children and youth for their heroism, character, courage, sacrifice and continued resilience.
Zeiders joins in recognizing military children’s unique contribution as their close family members serve our nation. We think military kids are remarkable, resilient and just plain awesome!
