National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

White ribbon with blue and purple ombre- “National Suicide Prevention Month, September”

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness.

Suicide is among the top ten leading causes of death in people ages 10-64 and is the second leading cause of death for youth. Suicidal feelings may be triggered by a crisis or the inability to deal with life stressors such as financial problems, a relationship break-up, or chronic pain or illness. It is so important to reach out to loved ones and check on them; one conversation could save a life. Remember, we never know what a person may be dealing with, so treat everyone with kindness.

The transition from warrior to civilian can be especially difficult for veterans. However, with love and support from people close to them, many veterans are overcoming these difficulties. If you are concerned about a veteran in your life, encourage them to seek help. Each branch of the military provides services for members and their family.

The Office of Veterans Affairs Crisis Line is available online or by dialing 988 or texting 838355 (the Veterans Crisis Line is still reachable with the previous phone number— 1-800-273-8255). This number is a toll-free, confidential resource that veterans, their families, and their friends can access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

We can combat suicide by promoting awareness and discussion to eliminate the stigma surrounding it. Whether by reaching out, raising awareness, or providing resources, working tougher to help individuals and communities in need can change lives every day.
