Founded on August 4, 1790, the Coast Guard began when Congress authorized the creation of a fleet of revenue cutters to enforce federal laws and protect the nation’s maritime interests. Over the past two centuries, the Coast Guard has grown into a vital military service, safeguarding our waterways, supporting maritime safety, and strengthening national security. 

The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect the public, preserve the environment, and defend U.S. economic and security interests across domestic and international waters. Through its dedication and readiness, the service continues to play a critical role in protecting our nation.
