01 Oct Domestic Violence Awareness Month
In October 1981, Domestic Violence Awareness was introduced as a means of uniting survivors and advocates in their efforts to end domestic violence. Since then, October has provided the opportunity for people to be educated about the signs of domestic violence, how they can help victims, as well as encourage victims to share their stories. It is important to note that physical violence is not the only form of abuse, and that verbal violence, stealing, stalking, manipulation, and more are also abusive.
Millions of Americans are affected by sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence every year. This is an issue that touches every demographic, which cannot be overstated.
Zeiders’s Behavioral Health Providers encourage us to speak out. Speaking out is imperative to breaking the stigma and allow victims to know they are not alone and can get help. Stay aware of the signs of domestic violence and you could save a life.
If you or a loved one is being abused, call the National Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), or search www.domesticshelters.org to find domestic violence programs in your area.
