Goals:

  • Emphasize that self-learning is an important way to develop knowledge in areas of personal interest
  • Ensure students understand that learning is a life-long process and that self-learning is essential to successful professionals, including entrepreneurs

Skills:

  • Identify general business publications
  • Identify professional subject-oriented publications
  • Write, in one sentence, the main point of a professional article
  • Write, in one sentence, how the information in an article can be applied to a student's business

Overview:

Independent reading is an essential part of specialized knowledge and skill development. In this course, each student will select his/her own business concept. Most students will pick a business that requires knowledge and skills that interest them however, in virtually all cases, their ability to succeed will be enhanced by developing reading habits that include general business and professional publications.

Chapter 5 initiates an ongoing course activity that requires each student to read at least one article from a general business or professional periodical each week and complete the Professional Publication Review Form contained in the text. The student is expected to summarize the main topic and identify how the topic can be applied to his/her business in one sentence.
